What is the Tree of life?
- The Tree of life represents a series of divine emanations of God’s creation, the nature of revealed divinity, the human soul, and the spiritual path of ascent by man. In this way, Kabbalists developed the symbol into a full model of reality, using the tree to depict a map of creation.
- The tree of knowledge of good and evil is equivalent to the 10 spheres seen from below upwards.
- The symbolic configuration is made of 10 spiritual principles, but 11 are shown, since Keter and Da’at are transposable.
- Scholars believe that the concept of a Tree of life with different spheres encompassing aspects of reality traces its origins back to Assyria (a substantial part of the greater Mesopotamian “cradle of civilization”) in the 9th century BCE.
- The Assyrians also assigned values and specific numbers to their deities similar to those used by Kabbalah. The beginnings of the Jewish Kabbalah are traced back by scholars to the Medieval Age (Europe, 5th – 15th centuries), originating in the Book of Bahir and the Book of Zohar.
- The first historical instance of the modern diagram appeared centuries later in the cover of the Latin translation of Gates of Light in the year 1516. Scholars have traced the origin of the art in the Porta Lucis cover to Johann Reuchlin.
What’s the importance of the Tree of life?
- It’s considered a spiritual molecule that repeats itself in a holographic manner.
- The Sephiroth are the 10 attributes/emanations in Kabbalah, through which Ein Sof (The Infinite, lit. no end) reveals itself and continuously creates both the physical realm and the chain of higher metaphysical realms (Seder hishtalshelus).
- Learning it’s symbolism, studying and internalizing it means being able to understand and articulate profound spiritual attributes present in all of nature.
